Fifteen years have passed since online cooperative cataloging was realized by Ohio College Library Center. In Japan, it has been just introduced since International Christian University Library, located at northern part of metropolitan Tokyo, selected CATSS system of UTLAS (University of Toronto Library Automation Systems; now CATSS-II of Utlas) for its cataloging in 1982. Thereafter, the Center for Bibliographic Information, University of Tokyo (now the National Center for Science Information System; NACSIS) opened its online cataloging service in April 1985. In addition, it is said that OCLC will export its products and services to the Japanese firm of Kinokuniya Company in 1987. In the future, most of research and university libraries in Japan will have participated in bibliographic utilities to do their cataloging and construct their local databases.

The purpose of this paper is 1) to survey and analyse Rikkyo University Library’s online cataloging of using Utlas system; 2) to evaluate Utlas performance; 3) to show the usefulness of title analysis of non-hit records when evaluating a bibliographic utilities’ databases besides hit ratio.

The results show that: 1) The average hit ratio for three years was 84.3%, of which exact match was about 5990 and partial match was 25%. 2) The largest number of non-hit records was German language publications and the second largest number was English language publications published in Japan. 3) According to title analysis, they were reprinted titles that recorded the largest number in non-hit records.
