The authors attempt to survey by questionnaire the actual conditions of reference services performed in the main libraries of Japanese universities consisting of two or more faculties (57 national universities, 16 public universities, and 132 private universities).

From this survey, the data of many variables in reference services are gathered, such as the number of reference librarians, the size of reference collections, the budget for reference materials, and the number of reference questions asked. To analyze the correlations in these variables, Pearson’s correlation coefficients are calculated.

Findings of these analyses are presented in a series of tables, and discuss focusing on the following topics, (1) the correlation between the number of students and the amount of resources for reference services; (2) the correlation between the number of students and the number of ’reference questions asked; (3) the correlation between the amount of resources for reference services and the number of reference questions asked; (4) the differences of the numbers of reference questions received between the libraries offering some specific reference services and those of not offering; and (5) the correlation between the amount of resources for reference services and the number of circulations.
