The automation of library operations has greatly advanced with the use of computers coupled with telecommunication networks. As Keio University has an idea of setting up an online cataloging network, at least within its library system, a four-month practice at OCLC, Inc. was very valuable to the writer. The OCLC is composed of the following 6 subsystems; (i) on-line union catalog and shared cataloging, (ii) serials control, (iii) acquisitions, (iv) interlibrary loans, (v) remote catalog access and circulation control, and (vi) information retrieval.
